Angel of the Month

Photograph by Rosemary Flannery
Author of Angels of Paris - An Architectural Tour through the History of Paris

March in Paris is often a time of fending off wild winds while awaiting sweet springtime.  On the garden-side pediment of the Rodin Museum, both wind and springtime are intertwined in an enchanting illustration of Zephyr, god of the west wind, and Flora, goddess of spring, flowers, and all things green.  The winged Zephyr poses a veiled crown of flowers on Flora's head, as angelic cherubs gather posies (on the left) and mimic a love scene in the corner (on the right).  Flora is incarnated by the pretty Duchess of Maine, Louise-Bénédicte de Bourbon-Condé, former mistress of this 18th century city-chateau.

Rodin Museum, 79 rue de Varenne, 7th arrondissement (Metro: Varenne)
