Angel of the Month

Photograph by Rosemary Flannery
Author of Angels of Paris - An Architectural Tour through the History of Paris

Trumpet poised in one hand and a shield engraved with the word "Architecture" in the other, this dashing, muscular stone angel stands at what was once the entrance to a surgeons’ school and amphitheater during the reign of Louis XIV.  Later transformed into a royal school of drawing, today the building houses a language institute. The angel, with his gorgeous feathery wings and long flowing locks, was designed by master sculptor Jean-Francois Jacquin in 1710.

5, rue de l’Ecole de Medecine, 6th arrondissement, (Metro: Cluny-LaSorbonne, St. Michel)
