Angel of the Month

Michael the Archangel in Mosaic
Photograph by Rosemary Flannery
Author of Angels of Paris - An Architectural Tour through the History of Paris

A gold and colored mosaic of Michael the archangel dazzles above the doorway of the Church of the Holy Archangels. Today the Romanian Orthodox of Paris, this small church was once the chapel of a medieval college and later purchased in 1882 by the Crown of Romania and placed under the protection of the archangels. Michael’s name is written as Mihail on his golden halo. His almond-shaped eyes, elongated nose and solemn demeanor evoke byzantine icons, the inspiration for this tympanum created in 1926 by the Atelier Guilbert-Martin, renowned for its work at the Grand Palais and Sacre Coeur. The church is now a political and spiritual refuge for Romanian refugees and exiles.

Church of the Holy Archangels, 9, rue Jean de Beauvais, 5th arrondissement (Metro: Maubert-Mutualité)
