Set against the sky, looking upward to heaven, Pierre-Jules-Cavelier’s 1861 stone angel graces the balustrade of Saint Germain l’Auxerrois. It was a new addition to a very old church, founded in the 7th century and rebuilt several times until the Renaissance. By 1859, the church was threatened with demolition, but Baron Haussmann, Commissioner of Paris under Napoleon II, determined to save it. The angel, with its curly hair, immense curved wings, and unfurled banner, reflects the style of the Italian masters the sculptor had studied in Rome, bringing a touch of the Renaissance to a church which had been reborn.
