Richard Wright's Paris

Richard Wright is one of America’s most renowned 20th century writers. He and his family visited Paris in 1946 and then settled there in 1947.  His self-imposed exile in France would inspire many other writers, including James Baldwin and Chester Himes, to establish residences there as well.

This self-guided walking tour takes you to many of the locations on the Left Bank that Wright, his family and his friends frequented during the 1940s and 50s.

The 34-page document, in downloadable PDF format, contains guided commentary (with photographs), a map, a chronology of Wright's life in Paris, information about and photographs of Père Lachaise Cemetery (where Wright's ashes are preserved), a list of the references that we consulted to prepare this walk, and a page for notes.
